The 1970s is a difficult period to sum up in a single sentence. For watches, however, the decade is inextricably linked to the industry’s biggest emergency: the Quartz Crisis. Just catching the tail end of mid-century design, we see that during this period the production of watches had become more standardised, allowing for more interesting shapes and forms to arise.
Created around late 90s and early 00s, this 70s spirit is clearly represented in the unusual case shape of this Vacheron Constantin Asymmetric, with its subtle trapezoid case. In this instance, the dial is a deep black with contrasting white numerals in a modern font, making it an interest variant compared to more classic iterations. The highly stylised numerals are angled against the case, creating a slightly offset impression which further adds to the asymmetry found within the case.
Turning the watch over reveals the hallmark of the brand and the following engraving: “MCMLXXII”, commemorating the occasion of Vacheron receiving the Prestige de la France award in 1972. The movement that powers this piece is a manual-winding calibre that is hidden behind a closed caseback, but which demonstrates the same high-quality finishing found on most of Vacheron Constantin’s other pieces.
